Cupping Treatment (Hijama)

Cupping Therapy is an ancient medical treatment that dates back thousands of years. Ancient Chinese, Koreans, Egyptians, and Arabs used Hijama as a form of traditional treatment. In Europe this practice is believed to date back to the Bronze Age, and until the advent of modern surgery, cupping was part of the routine medical practice of doctors in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, as well as in the United States. In the Far East (China and Korea), Cupping continued to be practiced by physicians of both western medicine and traditional medicine. In Turkey, this is called 'cup treatment' or 'hijama'.

According to the British Cup Association (2008), cupping therapy is an ancient medical technique that relies on creating a local skin vacuum to collect blood, followed by a second vacuum with superficial skin incisions to draw a small amount of blood from the skin. There is no relationship between the amount of blood taken and clinical benefit.

Academic interest in cupping has grown rapidly in recent years, and there is growing evidence that cupping can be effective in a number of conditions. The effects of cupping therapy that researchers are particularly interested in; are painful conditions such as migraine, rheumatism, fibromyalgia, arthritis and back pain (Cao et al. 2012). In addition, there is increasing clinical data regarding the benefits of cupping therapy in male and female endocrine diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and infertility (Rajput 2015).
